Mathoura Water Treatment Plant Upgrade

A regional water treatment plant running on an obsolete PLC, with site drawings that no longer matched reality. Scope redrew it, rewired it, and gave operators control of the plant from any device.

Industry

Water & Wastewater

Location

Mathoura, New South Wales

Duration

Jul 2022 to Dec 2022

Controller

CompactLogix 5380

The Brief

Scope of Works

The plant needed modern local and remote monitoring and control, with an interface operators could use on a PC or a phone. That meant historising and trending data from the water quality monitors, and giving operators the ability to start and stop the plant remotely.

Underneath the interface was a substantial electrical job. The existing Hitachi PLC had to go, level sensors were needed in every reservoir, and all existing instrumentation had to be brought back to a new controller. The site drawings were well out of date, so the documentation had to be rebuilt before the work could be designed properly.

What We Did

The Electrical Delivery

Electrical schematic design from the ground up, as the existing site drawings were outdated
Development of a site P&ID drawing to document the plant as it actually stood
Control panel design and build housing the new CompactLogix 5380 controller
Removal of the obsolete Hitachi PLC and its associated wiring
Installation of level sensors in all water reservoirs, including cabling and terminations
Rewiring all existing instrumentation back to the new controller, covering water quality monitors, flow, and pressure feedback
Field cabling, glanding, and terminations across the plant
Interfacing and testing against the old site control systems to keep the plant running through changeover

Alongside Scope Automation

Scope Automation built the SCADA in Ignition using the Perspective module, so the displays run in a web browser on any device without software to install on each machine. The CompactLogix 5380 communicates to it over Ethernet/IP. Every instrument we wired back to the controller became a live, trended data point on screen.

From the Job

The Result

A Plant You Can Run From Anywhere

Operators can now monitor and control the plant from a PC in the office or a phone in the field, with water quality data trended and historised rather than checked and forgotten.

The CompactLogix 5380 was specified with spare capacity, so the plant can grow without another controller swap. And the site finally has electrical schematics and a P&ID that reflect what is actually installed.
